It’s no secret that Arizona is on a multi-cultural come up. And with Phoenix ranking #5 among the most populated cities in the United States, the cultural expansion is not surprising. If you ask me, Phoenix pretty much has it all: art, music, nature and nightlife. The only thing missing is a beach…
The closest beach to Phoenix is 3.5 hours away by car located in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico (aka “Rocky Point”). After that, California beaches range from 4.5-7 hours away by car (that’s if you’re not speeding). But, come 2021 all of that is changing because- drumroll, please…
ARIZONA IS GETTING A BEACH!…
Well, sort of.
In reality we’re getting a new wave pool. But, this 11-acre wave pool will be something you don’t want to miss.
With the newest advancements in technology this park will house wave machines that are capable of generating “1000 waves per hour and can hold up to 90-100 surfers at any given time” according to the Monsoon Lagoon website.
The owner, Jerry Lehman, is looking to breathe life into and develop the surf culture of Arizona with this new park. His 11-acre manmade beach will be the go-to resource for all things surf-related. The facility will even hold competitions for pro and amateur surfing, bodyboarding, as well as long boarding.
Other Park Features
And in case surfing and swim isn’t enough for you the park will feature plenty of on-site activities. These include outdoor volleyball courts, a fitness trail for running and biking, outdoor fitness equipment, a gym and rehab facility. The park’s Twitter page, Monsoon Wave Park – ARIZONA is posting regular updates on their progress. Rumor has it that it will also feature a skate park, surf school and regular pools to avoid surfers. Though that hasn’t been announced on the company website.
If all this wasn’t enough, the property will also be equipped to host your vacation/staycation needs. Monsoon Lagoon will also offer accommodation pods sponsored by brands like Quiksilver and Hurley.
Instead of a 3.5 hour drive to Mexico, you’ll be able to just drive to Scottsdale just off the 10 Freeway to get a fix of the beach life. But, we’ll have to tough it out at least one more summer before it becomes reality as the park won’t be up and running until 2021.
