“The best f**ken old fashioned in Phoenix, is made in a coffee shop”
It is 8:17 PM when I find myself in a coffee shop on a Thursday night. The lights are dim and “Give It To Me Baby” by Rick James is harmonizing out of the speakers. Tonight the craving isn’t for anything caffeinated, as the taste buds thirst for something with a kick. Perhaps some bitters, a sweet Luxardo cherry, a twist of an orange peel and a hefty serving of Bulleit Rye.
A quick background of myself, in my early 20’s my drink of choice was beer only, Corona to be specific. I found myself judging other Mexicans that drank anything other than Mexican brew. Regretfully speaking, I am not sure what my ignorant ass was thinking, maybe I was trying to overcompensate for being born in the US and not Mexico? I don’t fucken know. Eventually, I began exploring craft beer and discovered a plethora of amazing flavors; IPAs, pilsners, stouts, double IPAs, hefeweizens, you name it. In early 2010, I discovered the show Mad Men. The main character, Don Draper portrayed by Jon Hamm, was such a smooth protagonist and I was instantly hooked. In a scene I remember, he asked for an old fashioned from the bartender and I thought to myself, “I need an old fashioned.” It wasn’t long after that when I found myself at a local restaurant and I ordered my first round. That first sip was like drinking straight fire; I said to myself, “What the fuck!” I had never drunk whiskey in my life before. Nonetheless, I continued to consume it, and as I sampled it at various locations, some better than others, I discovered Lux Central. This old fashioned wasn’t like the rest I had tasted; it wasn’t too sweet, nor too watered down, it was just on point.
Great craftsmanship shows when attention to detail is made priority, something I can humbly brag about the bartenders at Lux Central. The time the bartenders take to make your drink reflects on the quality of their products. The ice, the Luxardo cherry with its juicy syrup, stirring of the alcohol and passion that is put into the drink equates to perfection. I have had my fair share of late-night shifts when I’ve stumbled in here for a drink to soothe thy soul. There has also been plenty of times I’ve been in for breakfast, and the mouthwatering meals they serve are like none other. Quick PSA and recommendations; the NY strip with poached eggs or the pork belly bacon on top of scrambled eggs with hash browns are a must! “Get the fuck outta here!” (insert Donnie Brasco accent.) Ok, where were we? Oh yes, Lux for cocktails. Needless to say, I’ve found myself enjoying a few old fashioneds before ordering breakfast for that delightful pre meal buzz. Lux Central knew the way to my heart.
You may or may not agree with me, but friends don’t let friends drink shitty booze, therefore when those closest to me are in search of a good drink, I always tell them that the best old fashioned is served in a coffee shop. And if there is anything you can gain from this is, do not take my word for it. Go out into the world and try a couple of old fashioneds; but when you are ready for the best one, stop by Lux Central. Cheers fuckers!
